about

This song is based on an almost identical song I wrote when I was 19 years and didn't know quite as much about life as I do now. The song, then called "Martyr" was first sung by a woman named Amy McCue. I improved the lyrics (and changed the title) in 2004 when I began writing my musical THE BURDEN OF EDEN. It was then sung quite gracefully by my then-student Nikki Bonino. (The music to "Martyr," though almost identical, is nonetheless inferior.) Further information on THE BURDEN OF EDEN may be found at www.edeninbabylon.com/burden

lyrics

Alone in a world so large
It hardly seems right
A world almost boundless
Sealed within walls cold and white

A breeze in a breezeless Fall
Or a sun that pierces the rain
Reach no one whose life is a wall
A wall built on pillars of pain

The windows show shining lights
Fifteen in a row
They tell you of sleepless nights
Or of private parties among friends you know
And they ask you why you can't understand
Why no one is reaching for your hand

The windows show shining lights
Fifteen in a row
They tell you of sleepless nights
Or of private parties among friends you know
While you sit still by the telephone
Burn your life away by the telephone
With your eyes blinded so you won't understand
That Someone is reaching for your hand

Andy Pope

I was born at 11:30 on a Friday night, when all across America, people were partying, and surely there was a standing ovation taking place at some Performing Arts venue, somewhere. With all those bizarre influences acting upon me at the moment of my birth, you'd think people would cut me some slack concerning my wild and oft-erratic personality. ... more
